Tigers Notes: VerHagen on minor-league DL; Kelly wins Heart and Hustle Award

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 1:56 p.m. ET

Drew VerHagen, solid in his major-league debut in the first game of last Saturday's day-night doubleheader, is now on the disabled list.

VerHagen, 23, was sent back down to Triple-A Toledo after his start against the Cleveland Indians. VerHagen allowed three runs on five hits while walking three and striking out four in five innings.

According to several media reports, VerHagen has a back strain. He is on the minor-league 7-day disabled list, retroactive to July 20.

Late Monday night, left-handed reliever Kenny Faulk was promoted from Double-A Erie to Toledo. At the time, the Mud Hens had a full roster but once VerHagen was placed on the DL, it made sense.

Faulk was 2-3 with a 5.24 ERA in 31 games with the Erie Seawolves.

KELLY WINS HEART AND HUSTLE

The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association announced Tuesday that Don Kelly is the Tigers' 2014 Heart and Hustle Award winner.

According to the MLBPAA, the award is for "active players who demonstrate a passion for the game of baseball and best embody the values, spirit and tradition of the game."

"We are proud to present Don with this award," MLBPAA director of communications Nikki Warner said in a statement. "He embodies all that the award represents and is an inspirational role model to young players."

The MLBPAA had 30 committees of alumni players select a winner from each team.

This is Kelly's second time receiving the award.

Alumni and active players will vote on which of the 30 wins the final award, which will be announced Nov. 18 at the 15th Annual Legends for Youth Dinner in New York City.

The previous overall winners were David Eckstein (2005), Craig Biggio (2006, 2007), Grady Sizemore (2008), Albert Pujols (2009), Roy Halladay (2010), Torii Hunter (2011), Mike Trout (2012) and Dustin Pedroia (2013).
