Barry Switzer has coached some of the best running backs in the history of the game during his days at Oklahoma and with the Dallas Cowboys.
DeMarco Murray was a record-breaking rusher for the Sooners from 2007-11, but he was injured often and wasn't a Heisman Trophy finalist like his Sooners teammate Adrian Peterson.
Despite all the doubts experts had in Murray, Switzer knew he was a special talent.
So when Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was debating on selecting Murray when he was still available in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft, he turned to his former head coach for advice.
"I told Jerry, 'Hey, you guys gotta take him,'" Switzer said on KRLD-FM. "Not only does he have first-round talent ability, he will never embarrass your program. He is a great leader. He will never make a mistake. He'll never bust an assignment. You will be proud you have a representative like this playing for the Dallas Cowboys."
And he was right as Murray has continued to break records in the NFL, and is currently the league's leading rusher.
"They took him and thank God they did," Switzer said.
