StaTuesday: How Kidd compared to other Bucks head coaches
This might come as a surprise, but reaction was swift on social media following the firing of Milwaukee Bucks head coach Jason Kidd.
But we're not here to debate the pros and cons of the move, just look at Kidd's place in Bucks history among head coaches.
Turns out, Kidd leaves Milwaukee with the best winning percentage for a Bucks head coach since George Karl. However, unlike Karl, Kidd's record was below .500.
Of Milwaukee's first seven head coaches, from Larry Costello in 1969 to Karl, whose last year was 2003, four had winning records. The seven since Karl (not counting interim head coach Joe Prunty, who has coached all of one game) all had losing records.
Kidd, who has coached the seventh-most games in Bucks history, owns the fifth-best winning percentage and led the Bucks to a .500 or better record in 2 1/2 of his 3 1/2 seasons.
COACH | YEARS | G | W | L | PCT |
Don Nelson | 1977-87 | 884 | 540 | 344 | .611 |
Larry Costello | 1969-77 | 674 | 410 | 264 | .608 |
Del Harris | 1988-92 | 345 | 191 | 154 | .554 |
George Karl | 1999-2003 | 378 | 205 | 173 | .542 |
Jason Kidd | 2015-18 | 291 | 139 | 152 | .478 |
Scott Skiles | 2009-13 | 344 | 162 | 182 | .471 |
Jim Boylan | 2013 | 50 | 22 | 28 | .440 |
Terry Porter | 2004-05 | 164 | 71 | 93 | .433 |
Terry Stotts | 2006-07 | 146 | 63 | 83 | .432 |
Chris Ford | 1997-98 | 164 | 69 | 95 | .421 |
Frank Hamblen | 1992 | 65 | 23 | 42 | .354 |
Mike Dunleavy | 1993-96 | 328 | 107 | 221 | .326 |
Larry Krystowiak | 2007-08 | 100 | 31 | 69 | .310 |
Larry Drew | 2014 | 82 | 15 | 67 | .183 |
Milwaukee has made three other coaching moves in-season in franchise history. Terry Stotts and Scott Skiles were fired while Del Harris resigned to concentrate on just working the front office (he had been holding down dual jobs).
At the time of their firing, neither Skiles nor Kidd had a losing record and Harris left just one game under .500.
COACH | SEASON | G | W | L | PCT |
Del Harris | 1991-92 | 17 | 8 | 9 | .471 |
Terry Stotts | 2006-07 | 64 | 23 | 41 | .359 |
Scott Skiles | 2012-13 | 32 | 16 | 16 | .500 |
Jason Kidd | 2017-18 | 45 | 23 | 22 | .511 |
How did their replacements do?
Frank Hamblen took over for Harris and went 23-43 (.354) and did not return as head coach the next season.
Larry Krystowiak was signed to a long-term contract after Stotts was fired and finished the season with a 5-13 record. He lasted one more year before he, too, was let go.
Jim Boylan took over for Skiles and went 22-28 (.444) and did not return as head coach the next season.
Well, at least Prunty is saddled with interim coach expectations.
