Softball pitcher tosses the perfect perfect game: 21 strikeouts
A softball pitcher in New Jersey threw the ultimate perfect game on Friday.
Cedar Grove's Mia Faieta faced 21 batters in a 4-0 playoff victory over North Warren and struck out every one of them.
Per News12varsity.com:
"This was fun," said Faieta, who has helped her team to a 19-7 record while competing in one of the state's toughest divisions, the Super Essex Conference-American.
"I knew as the game kept going on a that I had more and more," she said. "I didn't want to say anything because I didn't want to jinx it. I had the three in first inning and thought maybe I could keep doing it. Then I realized after a while that maybe it could happen."
Faieta struck out 18 of the Patriots swinging. The 21 strikeouts, however, are not a state record. In 2003, Nicole Webb of Manchester Township actually fanned 22 due to a wild pitch on a strikeout in a regular-season game.
"I've never witnessed anything like that," coach Nikki Velardi said. "... I've thought [Faieta] could do it, but I didn't expect it today in a state game. All of her pitches were working, and they were working together."
