Smith: 'I just want to be somewhere I can make a difference'

J.R. Smith, participating in a Guam basketball clinic, told the Pacific Daily News he just wants to be somewhere he can make a difference. "I don't want to be somewhere I can't have an affect on the team," Smith said.

Smith opted out of the final year of his contact to become a free agent on July 1. Now more than one month into free agency, Smith is still a free agent, waiting to sign with a team.

Smith reportedly met with the Cavaliers in late June, but the two sides haven't come to an agreement yet.

Last season with the Cavaliers, Smith averaged 12.7 PPG on 42.5 percent shooting and 3.5 RPG in 31.8 minutes per game. The Cavs finished the season on a 34-13 run, reaching the NBA Finals with Smith starting at shooting guard.

"I would love to be a starter, but it depends on the situation and what team I'm on," Smith told the Pacific Daily News. "Cleveland is in a situation where they don't really need me to start. I can come off the bench and bring the energy and stuff like that."
