Shabazz Muhammad's NBA slate is clean no more.
The Minnesota Timberwolves' top draft pick was sent home from the league's Rookie Transition Program, for, as reported by USA Today Sports, bringing a female guest into his Florham Park, N.J., hotel room Tuesday evening. Just hours before, players had been explained the program's rules, which include no guests unless authorized by administrators.
Muhammad was immediately kicked out of the four-day event. He'll be fined and have to complete the seminar next summer with the 2014 draft class.
"We have been made aware of the circumstances surrounding Shabazz Muhammad’s dismissal from the NBA’s Rookie Transition Program in New Jersey," Minnesota president of basketball operations Flip Saunders said in a statement. "The team fully supports the NBA’s rules and policies in all matters pertaining to this situation and we will abide by the league's action."
Coming in with a less-than-ideal reputation, the draft's No. 14 overall pick appeared to keep his nose out of trouble during his first few weeks of professional basketball. He addressed questions about his falsified age and rap as a selfish player at UCLA with mostly the right words, and a trip to his hometown of Las Vegas for NBA Summer League play went off without a hitch.
But 41 days after Minnesota landed him in a draft-day deal, he's already garnered discipline from the NBA.
Muhammad's not the first rookie program attendee to be expelled. In 2008, Mario Chalmers and Darrell Arthur were sent home and fined $20,000 each for having women and marijuana in their room. Michael Beasley later admitted he was there, too, and drew a $50,000 fine.
