Seahawks' 12th Man license set to expire in 2016

It might be time to pay up.

The Seattle Seahawks have an upcoming issue on their hands as the license that allows them to use the "12th Man' slogan will expire next year. The phrase was trademarked by Texas A&M University in 1990 and litigation against the Seahawks allowed the NFL franchise to use it at a price of $5,000 a year.

The Seahawks and Texas A&M made the original deal in 2006 and then renewed it in 2011. Negotiations between both sides to extend it beyond 2016 have begun, but as ProFootballTalk points out, the price of the license could significantly increase, considering the Seahawks have made big money selling 12th Man related merchandise.
