Rice edges Houston Baptist 3-1
HOUSTON (AP) -- Ryan Chandler had two hits and two RBIs to lead Rice to a 3-1 win over Houston Baptist Sunday in the completion of a suspended elimination game.
The game was suspended in the top of the fourth inning due to lightning and rain on Saturday.
Rice (36-21) moves on to face the loser of Louisiana-Lafayette and Houston in another elimination game later Sunday. Houston Baptist (28-27) was eliminated.
Chandler put the Owls on top 1-0 in the fourth with an RBI double before the rain delay started Saturday.
After the game resumed on Sunday, Chandler scored off a wild pitch by Curtis Jones and an errant throw to third by Samm Wiggins.
Chandler extended the lead to 3-0 with an RBI single in the sixth, but Brandon Morones made it 3-1 with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning.
Ford Stainback had four hits and scored twice for Rice.
Jordan Stephens went three innings. He allowed no runs and one hit with three strikeouts Saturday before the game was suspended. Ricardo Salinas (3-2) threw 2 2-3 innings of relief for the win. Matt Ditman threw 3 1-3 scoreless innings for his 11th save.
Wiggins and Greg Espinosa each had two hits for the Huskies.
Jones (6-7) allowed three runs -- two earned -- and eight hits with four strikeouts in 7 1-3 innings.
