Rangers activate RHP Feliz from DL; option starter Martinez
It was a busy Thursday for the Texas Rangers as they made a key roster move and also made four signings on the first day of the international signing period.
The Rangers sent right-hander Nick Martinez to Triple A and reinstated right-hander Neftali Feliz from the 15-day disabled list.
The move has nothing to do with the performance of Martinez, who is 5-5 with a 3.43 ERA. It does give him a little breather before the All-Star break and opens up the way for the Rangers to reinstate left-hander Matt Harrison from the disabled list Friday. That's when the 30-day rehab window is up for Harrison. He's expected to make his first start of the season for Texas Tuesday.
Feliz went on the DL May 25 with an abscess on his right side. Feliz made 10 rehab appearances and posted a 7.36 ERA. The Texas closer to open the season, Feliz lost that job after going 1-2 with a 5.09 ERA for Texas before the injury.
The Rangers were busy in the international signing period, getting deals done with Dominican centerfielder Leody Taveras, Colombian left-hander Reiver Sanmartin, Venezuelan catcher Francisco Ventura and Venezuelan centerfielder Miguel Aparicio.
"Taveras is a dynamic, switch-hitting centerfielder who comes from a terrific family rich in baseball tradition," Texas assistant general manager Thad Levine said.
Sanmartin is a strike thrower who pitched well in relief for the Sincelejo Toros in the Colombian Winter League. Ventura is a right-handed hitting catcher with a strong arm and gap power. Aparicio is a line-drive contact hitter.
Texas freed up extra money for international signings by trading right-hander Jason Hoppe to the Los Angeles Angels for their international slot compensation.
