Packers RB Eddie Lacy done for Week 2 after taking vicious helmet-to-helmet hit

By Sam Gardner, FOXSports.com The NFL keeps tweaking its rules to emphasize player safety, but it took just six plays in Sunday’s Packers-Redskins game to get a reminder that hits to the head still plague the game and can be very, very dangerous. In this case, it was Washington safety Brandon Meriweather who laid the lumber, knocking out rookie running back Eddie Lacy out with this hit on Green Bay’s first drive:

The Packers have already announced that Lacy is out for the game with a concussion. Meriweather was not penalized on the play, but you can bet that the NFL will be taking another look at this hit. UPDATE: Meriweather has also left the game after suffering a concussion a different play. It’s not the first time Meriweather has been on the business end of a questionable hit. In 2010, while with the Patriots, he delivered this helmet-to-helmet shot on Ravens tight end Todd Heap and was later fined $50,000 for it:

Then in 2011, Meriweather was fined $20,000 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Steve Smith of the Carolina Panthers, and one week later, he was fined another $25,000 after hitting Nate Burleson in the helmet after a Matt Stafford pass had already been intercepted by a fellow Bears defender:
