Packers communicating with Favre, attempted reunion in '13

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- If Brett Favre had not been such a successful offensive coordinator at Oak Grove High School this past season, his long-awaited official reunion with the Green Bay Packers would have already happened.

At least that's the reasoning Packers president Mark Murphy gave Tuesday morning before heading out on the team's annual Tailgate Tour.

As has become tradition at the event, Murphy was asked about Favre's status with the franchise the retired 44-year-old quarterback led for 16 seasons. Last year, Murphy told FOXSportsWisconsin.com that the Packers wanted Favre "back in the family." As it turns out, that almost didn't take long at all.

"There's not a lot to report," Murphy said. "We do have ongoing communications with him and I think relations are good. We're hopeful to have him come back soon.

"We wanted to have him come back to a game last year, (but) his team kept winning and winning, so it kind of made of made it tough to find a time where it worked."

Reports in early April were that Favre informed Oak Grove High School that he would not return to the school in 2014 after helping the team win its first Mississippi 6A state title. Oak Grove won the title in early December 2013, and by that time in the NFL season, Green Bay was struggling to win without an injured Aaron Rodgers and was seemingly falling out of playoff contention.

The relationship between Favre and the Packers took its first positive step forward in February 2013 when he and Rodgers -- who did not often see eye-to-eye as teammates from 2005-2007 -- appeared on stage together at the NFL Honors show.

Now, it seems a matter of when, not if, Favre will be back in Green Bay to get introduced once again to the Lambeau Field crowd. While Favre likely would have received mostly boos had this reunion taken place a few years ago for the way he exited the Packers and wound up with the division-rival Minnesota Vikings, as both parties have since stated, enough time has passed that old wounds have healed and he should be greeted with open arms by fans in Green Bay.
