MLB Quick Hits: Setback for Nats' Rendon

Published May. 5, 2015 6:31 a.m. ET

There had been some talk of Nationals 3B Anthony Rendon returning later this week from his knee injury, but no such luck. Rendon has strained an oblique muscle, and will cease his rehab efforts until he's "ready to play," according to Nats' manager Matt Williams.

How long will that be? According to the Washington Post, Williams compared Rendon's injury to that of teammate Yunel Escobar, who went 10 days without baseball activity before getting started again. At this point, the earliest you should expect to see Rendon back with the Nats is Memorial Day weekend.

Red Sox OF Hanley Ramirez sprained his shoulder while running into a wall on Monday. The Sox are calling Ramirez day-to-day and hoping that he'll avoid the DL.

Rays SP Alex Cobb (forearm) has had a setback in his rehab. The Tampa Bay Times noted that "concerns grow about the possibility of a more serious injury, and potential talk of surgery," but that's not official. Keep your fingers crossed, though.

Rockies RP Adam Ottavino is headed for Tommy John surgery. Those 10 days he had as closer were fun, right? John Axford has the job for the foreseeable future.

Tanner Roark got Monday's save for the Nationals, but only because Drew Storen was unavailable. Nothing to see here.

Seth Maness got Monday's save for the Cardinals, but only because Trevor Rosenthal had pitched on the three previous days. Nothing to see here, either.

Twins OF Oswaldo Arcia will miss a couple of weeks due to a hip injury. Eduardo Escobar started in left field for the Twins on Monday, and Eddie Rosario was recalled from Triple-A, but neither one of those guys can hit.

Indians 1B Nick Swisher (knees) will be activated from the DL today. Cleveland.com says that Swisher will be "eased" back into regular duty.

The Mariners have recalled SS Chris Taylor from the minors. He's probably going to play more than Brad Miller moving forward, even though Miller hasn't been terrible. In other Mariners' news, look for Justin Ruggiano to get regular playing time in center field while Austin Jackson (ankle) is on the DL.

Monday's streaming starter, Jesse Hahn, got knocked around and was no help at all. Today's pick is Houston's Scott Feldman (owned in 4.1 percent of FOXSports.com leagues) against the Rangers, who have OPS'd an MLB-worst .566 against righthanded pitchers.

DFS advice (salaries from DraftKings): The Phillies have also been terrible against RHPs, making Shelby Miller ($8,200) a solid SP option ... Looking for a stack? The Angels hit southpaws pretty well, and draw James Paxton tonight. In addition to the usual suspects (Trout, Pujols), you can consider 1B C.J. Cron ($3,400), 3B David Freese ($3,300) and OF Colin Cowgill ($2,700) ... A lefty (Jason Vargas) against the Indians means that you can - and should - play Ryan Raburn ($3,000) ... Here's your reminder to always start Jose Altuve ($5,300) in 50/50 games against lefthanded pitchers. All other righthanded-hitting Astros are in play as well ... At SS, I'll be firing up Starlin Castro ($3,800) vs. Cardinals' lefty Tyler Lyons ... The weather forecast in Denver isn't great, so you might want to avoid D-backs and Rockies. Or, you could be like a fantasy analyst you know who was in a hurry yesterday afternoon and got stuck with Paul Goldschmidt in his lineup.

See you back here tomorrow morning.
