MLB Quick Hits: O's Jones out until Friday ... or longer

Published Jun. 24, 2015 6:46 a.m. ET

Orioles CF Adam Jones has played just twice in the last seven days due to a sore right shoulder. Jones and the team keep saying he'll avoid the DL, but as Jones said on Tuesday, "I don't like the DL, but I can't play. It's uncomfortable."

The current hope is that Jones will return to the Orioles' lineup on Friday, but that's a hope, not a guarantee. If you own Jones, have a backup plan ready in case he goes on the DL. Jones' teammate, Chris Parmelee (owned in 2.8 percent of FOXSports.com leagues) wouldn't be a bad option.

The Rangers shuffled their lineup in Adrian Beltre's return from the DL. with Rougned Odor atop the lineup and Joey Gallo second. But, Shin-Soo Choo was out with back spasms, so let's see what happens when he comes back.

Not a bad comeback start for Stephen Strasburg. He didn't allow a run, but threw 94 pitches in five innings, which isn't exactly efficient.

The Phillies have placed 2B Chase Utley on the DL with right ankle inflammation. It's a good thing they still have the best hitter in the world, Maikel Franco. Franco slugged his 10th homer of the season on Tuesday.

The Blue Jays have removed Brett Cecil from the closer's role, and say they'll go with a committee. Unless the Jays make a trade, Roberto Osuna (owned in 2.4 percent of FOXSports.com leagues) is the man to target.

Justin Verlander has been scratched from today's start due to back stiffness. Buck Farmer will start in Verlander's place against the Indians.

Astros 3B Luis Valbuena hit his 18th and 19th home runs of the season on Tuesday. No, I can't believe it either.

Mets C Travis d'Arnaud is back on the DL with a sprained elbow. Look for Kevin Plawecki to be the main replacement again.

Look for lefty prospect Andrew Heaney to take Jered Weaver's spot in the Angels' rotation next week. Heaney has had some ups and downs at Triple A this season, but he's got a bright future.

Mike Montgomery shut out the Royals on Tuesday, allowing four hits and striking out 10. Don't count on this happening often, as Montgomery is a back-of-the-rotation starter. He's not a good target in shallow leagues.

The Red Sox have sent OF Rusney Castillo back to the minors. Shane Victorino is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment today, and should be in Boston's outfield mix soon.

Giants OF Norichika Aoki is on the DL with a broken leg. At this rate, the Giants might have to go with a one-outfielder, six-infielder setup.

There are five afternoon games on today's schedule, including a pair (Tigers-Indians, Blue Jays-Rays) at 12:10 p.m. ET. Set your lineups early.

Mike Fiers was pretty good as Tuesday's streaming starter. Today's pick is Milwaukee's Jimmy Nelson (7.5 percent owned), as the Mets don't have anyone left to hit against him.

DFS advice (based on 50/50 games, night games only, salaries from DraftKings): I'm paying the $10,500 for Gerrit Cole ... Nelson ($6,100) could be a cheap second SP, but Jordan Zimmermann's price ($7,800) against the Freeman-less Braves looks pretty good ... The D-backs and Rockies will both use mediocre righty starters again tonight, so stack away ... The Marlins have crushed southpaws (.340 wOBA) this season, and could be a sneaky stack as well. Giancarlo Stanton ($5,200) is an obvious play, while catcher J.T. Realmuto ($3,300) and lefty-mashing 1B/2B Jeff Baker ($2,700) could fit as well. Realmuto batted second on Tuesday ... David Ortiz ($4,400) is a solid 1B buy, as is Adam Lind ($4,000) ... If Joey Gallo ($3,700) bats near the top of the order again, he's the best 3B value ... If you don't want to pay for Troy Tulowitzki, Brandon Crawford ($3,500) looks solid vs. Ian Kennedy ... Nelson Cruz ($4,700) is a strong play vs. Danny Duffy ... With Jones still out in Baltimore, OF Chris Parmelee ($3,100) might bat third again.

See you back here tomorrow morning.
