Mayfield expected to play vs. Oklahoma State

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 11:46 p.m. ET

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said quarterback Baker Mayfield has passed all the appropriate protocols and is expected to play Saturday against Oklahoma State in Stillwater.

Mayfield was hurt in the second quarter of the 30-29 win against TCU. Mayfield played the rest of the half but did not return in the second half, despite passing concussion tests and being cleared to play.

"I know our doctors are incredible, thorough and always err on the safe side," Stoops said Saturday.

Stoops said Mayfield complained of headaches at halftime and it was then the trainers decided to be cautious and hold Mayfield out.

"To this point, it has all checked out well," Stoops said. "If (Mayfield) continues his progression throughout the week without a setback, he'll be expected to play."

Mayfield took a helmet-to-helmet hit from TCU's Ty Summers. Summers was then ejected.

"It becomes based on clinical judgements. Some of the signs and symptoms can be delayed," said OU trainer Scott Anderson. "That's where checking and re-checking comes into play. That's what we did Saturday night. There's room for optimism."
