Marlins recall reliever Carter Capps

MIAMI -- The Miami Marlins recalled right-handed reliever Carter Capps as the corresponding roster move with righty Jarred Cosart on the 15-day disabled list with vertigo (retroactive May 14).

With righty Tom Koehler starting in Cosart's place on Tuesday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Marlins needed another arm in the bullpen.

Capps, who pitched one scoreless outing in a brief stint with the ballclub in Atlanta last month, went 0-2 with a 1.80 ERA and three saves in 13 appearances with Triple-A New Orleans.

During his time in the minors, Capps worked with pitching coach John Duffy in ensuring he didn't get called for illegal pitches again like one of his first outings with the Zephyrs this year. The umpire said his back foot wasn't adhering to the drag line.

"He's thrown very well down there (are) the reports we got," manager Dan Jennings said. "He had the little technical issue with illegal pitches and he worked very quickly to correct that. He's throwing well down there. The reports that we got is his fastball he's commanded extremely well, and we know what kind of arm he has. I'm looking forward to him to jump up and contribute right away."

The Marlins rank 21st in the majors with a 4.13 bullpen ERA. Relievers tossed four shutout innings last night until righty Steve Cishek allowed the go-ahead run in his second frame of work in a 3-2 loss in the 13th.

As for Koehler's status in the rotation, Jennings said it is to be determined. Entering Tuesday, Koehler is 2-3 with a 4.62 ERA in seven starts in 2015. He threw three scoreless frames on Saturday against the Braves in his return to the bullpen.

"I think a lot of that... health, obviously, with Cosart," Jennings said. "These things, as you guys know, they have a way to work themselves out in baseball. I'm just thankful that we have TK -- have him stretched out. He's a warrior, he goes to battle every time. We're very fortunate to have the depth we have and certainly the quality of that depth."

Cosart, meanwhile, went to the doctor after feeling bad the last couple of days. He has a left ear infection and had a sinus infection before that. Cosart began taking medicine for it on Tuesday. Cosart has two days of no activity before trying to throw again. He is eligible to come off the DL on the next roadtrip.

Since going eight scoreless frames on April 27 against the New York Mets, Cosart has posted a 6.91 ERA in his past three starts. His tight right hamstring no longer bothers him, an injury that forced him to leave last Wednesday's start in Los Angeles in the sixth.

"I had a sinus infection about a month ago and the doctor said things didn't fully go away, which probably led to my ears getting messed up," Cosart said. "Then I had the (ear) infection, which led to the vertigo. So I'm just taking it day-by-day and we'll see what happens. Just felt really off balanced. It wasn't a nauseous type of thing. So I decided to say something about it and obviously they found that."

Miami still has one open spot on the 40-man roster after designating righty Nick Masset for assignment over the weekend.

Worth noting -- Marcell Ozuna returned to the lineup in center field and batting cleanup after being a late scratch for Monday's opener.

"It was a personal matter, one that he needed to take care of," Jennings said. "Everything is good now. He's back, he's in and ready to go."
