The Marlins officially announced the signing of reliever Carlos Marmol to a one-year, $1.25 million deal on Tuesday afternoon.
The 31-year-old right-hander has a 23-32 record and 3.46 ERA in parts of eight big league seasons. The Cubs traded him to the Dodgers in 2013 after he struggled in 31 appearances with a 5.36 ERA. With Los Angeles, he posted a 2.53 ERA in 21 1/3 innings.
Marmol spent three seasons (2010-12) as Chicago's primary closer, tallying 117 saves (28 blown). His career year came in 2010 when he closed 38 games.
Since the start of the 2008 season, Marmol leads all relievers in appearances (426), strikeouts (575) and his .176 opponents' average ranks fifth.
"With the signing of Carlos, we add a proven reliever with experience in the late innings," president of baseball operations Michael Hill said in a statement. "We are thrilled to add a player of his quality to an already deep bullpen."
To make room for him on the 40-man roster, Miami designated reliever Chris Hatcher for assignment. Four days ago, the Marlins signed infielder Jeff Baker to a two-year contract and designated outfielder Jimmy Paredes.
Miami also signed right-hander Chaz Roe to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training. The 27-year-old went 1-0 with a 4.03 ERA in 21 appearances for the Diamondbacks last season -- his first in the majors. There are 69 players slated to be in camp.
Pitchers and catchers report to Jupiter, Fla. for camp this Sunday.
