MacDonald’s face a swollen mess day after Lawler brawl

Published Jul. 13, 2015 2:22 a.m. ET

A night after welterweight champion Robbie Lawler’s brawl against Rory MacDonald that left both men swollen, broken and battered, UFC president Dana White on Sunday tweeted a photo of Lawler following "The Ultimate Fighter" finale in Las Vegas.

The tweet applauded the doctor for doing such a great job closing a Grand Canyon-sized gap in Lawler's upper lip, but it also served a stone cold reminder of what Lawler looked like.

And Lawler won the fight. Indeed, the doctor’s work is worthy of praise. Here is a look at Lawler taking in Sunday’s action at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

The tweet also reminded us to check in with contender MacDonald to see how he was holding up after the all-out war with Lawler for the UFC's welterweight belt.

Turns out, swelling has made MacDonald even more unrecognizable than he was on fight night.

Both warriors still seemed strong in spirit, however, congratulating each other the day after their brawl on Twitter.

Lawler defeated MacDonald via fifth-round TKO at UFC 189. MacDonald created an 86-70 advantage in significant strikes but Lawler's aggression and power in the fifth and final round overwhelmed the Canadian. The American Top Team fighter is the first welterweight to defend the title since retired champion Georges St-Pierre.
