Los Angeles reportedly a candidate to host 2020 Super Bowl

It's once again time for Los Angeles-based football fans to get excited -- maybe.

Los Angeles reportedly will be considered as a host for the 2020 Super Bowl, according to Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times. Though, there's a caveat tied to any potential bid -- L.A. must first have an NFL team.

As if the idea of an NFL team calling L.A. home isn't exciting enough, now there could be a Super Bowl?! The keyword there being "could." Just like there "could" be two teams here within the next two years.

League owners on Wednesday heard from the team owners who are backing the Inglewood (Rams) and Carson (Chargers/Raiders) stadium proposals.

The NFL will vote by May 2016 on which city will host the 2020 Super Bowl, but Farmer reports that the 2020 decision "partly hinges on who hosts the Super Bowl before it," as the 2019 host will be pulled out of the mix for 2020. Atlanta, New Orleans, Tampa and South Florida are the cities/regions up for the 2019 Super Bowl.

L.A. has played host to seven Super Bowls, five of which were played at the Rose Bowl with the other two, including the first, at the Coliseum.

What this means is very little, realistically for now. While it seems L.A. has never been closer to having professional football back in its backyard, the NFL has been down this road before. We all know how it routinely turns out -- L.A. gets used as leverage only to be left feeling cold and alone.

If hosting the big game is contingent on having a team in the market, don't hold your breath, L.A. football fans.
