Josh Samman Passes Away After Brief Coma at 28
Josh Samman, five-fight UFC veteran, has passed away after spending the past few days in a coma. At this time, it is unclear how Samman and his roommate died.
Last week, it was reported that UFC Middleweight Josh Samman was found unresponsive in his South Florida apartment. His roommate, MMA announcer Troy Kirkingburg, was announced dead at the scene.
It has been confirmed by sources close to the situation, that Josh Samman passed away today after spending several days in a coma. Doctors found no drugs in his system and there is no evidence of foul play. At this time, it’s unclear how both men died.
Josh Samman (MMA record 12-4) made his pro debut in 2007. He officially became part of the UFC in 2013 when he was cast on The Ultimate Fighter 17. After a string of victories on the show, he would eventually lose to tournament winner Kelvin Gastelum in the semi-finals.
Samman would then go on amass a UFC record of 3-2. Two out of his three wins resulted in Performance of the Night bonuses, including a brutal headkick knockout of Eddie Gordon.
Samman recently signed on to fight Oluwale Bamgbose at UFC Albany in December, putting pen to paper just a few days before this saga.
Samman was also a published writer. He’s the author of the book, The Housekeeper: Love, Death, and Prizefighting. The book chronicled his issues with addiction, terrible injuries, and the death of his girlfriend. Samman’s girlfriend died in 2013 in a car accident while the two were texting each other. Samman also contributed to Bloody Elbow on a regular basis. He started off as a fan contributor but officially became part of the staff in March 2015. Samman also wrote for UFC.com and Flocombat.
Few people know that Samman was one of Florida’s earliest amatuer MMA promoters. When Florida passed legislation for the creation of a governing body for amateur MMA, Samman along with a business partner created Combat Night.
The promotion has expanded into Jacksonville, Orlando, and Miami. It eventually became the largest MMA promotion in Florida. Combat Night celebrated it’s 50th card on September 26, 2015 in Tallahassee Florida. There were roughly 4,000 people in attendance.
