WEST ALLIS, Wis. (AP) Joey Mantia edged four-time Olympic medalist Shani Davis in the 1,500-meter race Saturday at the U.S. Long Track Speedskating Championships.
Mantia, of Ocala, Florida, had a winning time of 1:45.11 at the Pettit National Ice Center. He competed in the 2014 Olympics in which the U.S. team failed to medal for the first time since 1984.
Davis, of Chicago, finished in 1:45.99. He won an Olympic silver medal in 2006 and 2010 at that distance and once held the world record. He also won Olympic gold twice at 1,000 meters. He has not won a World Cup race this season. He won the World Cup 1,000-meter championship last season.
The 33-year-old Davis is the first African-American to win a Winter Olympics medal. He is not sure if he will try for his fifth Olympic team in 2018.
