Joe Mauer earns another Silver Slugger award
MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer has another trophy to add to his collection.
Mauer won his fifth career Silver Slugger Award on Wednesday as one of Major League Baseball's best hitters and the top offensive catcher in the American League. In 2013, Mauer batted .324 with 11 home runs and 47 RBI in 113 games.
"It's always nice to be selected and honored by the managers and coaches across the American League,” Mauer said in a statement. "I take a lot of pride in my approach at the plate and want to thank Louisville Slugger for the award and the Minnesota Twins for giving me the chance to play the game I love."
It's Mauer's first Silver Slugger Award since 2010. He won the first of his career in 2006 and then won back-to-back-to-back awards from 2008-10. Mauer also earned a trip to his sixth career All-Star Game this season.
Four former Twins -- Boston designated hitter David Ortiz, Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter, Rockies outfielder Michael Cuddyer and Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy -- also won Silver Slugger Awards on Wednesday.
