Saturday night was the Brody Hoying show.

The Coldwater quarterback was the offense. He ran and threw over, around, and through the defense of Canton Central Catholic.

Behind the arm and legs of Hoying, Coldwater rolled to their third straight Div. V state championship 62-21 over Canton Central Catholic.

On their first drive of the night, the folks at Ohio Stadium got a little preview of what the night would consist of, a lot of Hoying. Hoying capped off the four play 66-yard opening drive with a 36-yard touchdown pass to Kraig Schoenherr.

The defense quickly got the ball back in Hoying's hands and the onslaught continued. Hoying followed up his first drive touchdown pass with a 24-yard touchdown run.

Hoying finished the day with four touchdowns on the ground and two through the air to go along with 335 (99 passing 236 rushing) yards of total offense. His four rushing touchdowns tied a Div. V record.

After the game, Hoying attributed his big day on the ground to the play of his offensive linemen.

"We ran the ball really well tonight," Hoying said. "The offensive linemen had some really good pull blocks and the trust was definitely there that they were going to kick the guy out and we were going to hit the hole hard. All credit goes to the offensive line."

For Hoying, winning championships is in his blood. His cousin Bobby (Hoying) was Ohio's Mr. Football at St. Henry High and won a state title in 1990, and his cousin Tom (Hoying) led his unbeaten St. Henry team to a state title in 1994.

Coldwater head coach Chip Otten said today was probably his team's best performance of the season.

"Wow, I think we played our best game today, because that's a good team we played," Otten said. "They just went through Ursuline and then they went through Bishop Hartley two really good teams. We put it together today with our best performance."

Canton Central Catholic made things interesting in the second half with a couple of touchdowns in the third quarter pulling within 48-21, but fighting an intermittent running clock the deficit was too much to overcome.

With the win, Coldwater became the third Midwest Athletic Conference school to capture a state title. This is the first time the conference has won three titles, but the sixth time they have won at least two titles in the same season. The MAC becomes the first conference in OHSAA history to win three state titles in the same season.

Otten said the expectations of playing in the MAC has helped his team reach the accomplishments they've had in the past few seasons.

"I guess the expectations have become so high where if you can win the league, you're going to get in the playoffs for sure," Otten said. "Then you want to try to carry that on and you don't have to do anything different."

Coldwater didn't do anything different on Saturday night, they rode Hoying just like they have all season on the way to another state title.
