Gulf Coast League names Cardinals SS Cordoba its MVP

Allen Cordoba, a shortstop in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league organization, was named Most Valuable Player of the Gulf Coast League, it was announced Wednesday. Cordoba and two other Cardinals farmhands also were named to the rookie league's All-Star team.

Cordoba led the league in hitting (.342) and hits (69) while finishing second in runs (40) and total bases (85). Cordoba, 19, also finished fourth in on-base percentage (.404) and fifth in slugging percentage (.421). The Panama native was also the league's toughest batter to strike out, fanning once every 11.45 plate appearances.

Also named to the All-Star team were outfielder Bladimil Franco, a 21-year-old from the Dominican Republic, and David Oca, a 20-year-old pitcher from Venezuela.
