Groovy! Rays wear '60s garb for latest road trip
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Peace, love and ... baseball.
On Sunday, the Tampa Bay Rays traveled to the West Coast to start a seven-game road trip with hippie flair. The team dressed for its Woodstock-themed jaunt to play the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels, its 30th themed trip since manager Joe Maddon started the concept in 2008. The sights were memorable.
Maddon's appearance was impressive, something that look lifted from a closet in the 1960s. He said he already owned all the necessary attire, except for the wig, which was bought at a vintage clothing store in Tampa.
"Yeah, I got 'em all," Maddon said. "I (bought) the wig, though. They actually had my hair color."
Many players went along with the groovy attire -- "Hopefully, I brought my 'A' game," left-hander Cesar Ramos said before a 6-5 loss to the Cleveland Indians at Tropicana Field -- but none could top Maddon's look. This is the Rays' second themed road trip this season, following Hat Trip 2.0 to Chicago on April 24.
