Former Oklahoma track coach Smith moving to Iowa State
Oklahoma track coach Martin Smith will be the new coach at Iowa State.
"We'll recruit hard, train hard and build a program that can sustain itself at the highest levels," Smith said. "The combination of tremendous facilities, a significant commitment to our sport and a terrific tradition are necessary ingredients, and they are a great springboard for an exciting future. The Cyclone program has a rich history, and my goal is simply to help our student-athletes reach their individual potentials and add to that legacy."
The OU men finished second in the Big 12 Conference Outdoor Championships this season. Iowa State was ninth. The OU women were fifth and the Iowa State women were sixth.
"We express our appreciation to Martin Smith for his efforts in further elevating the standards for our track and field program at the University of Oklahoma," OU Athletic Director Joe Castiglione said. "We will begin our national search to find the right individual to continue the tradition of OU Track and Field program that has produced numerous national champions throughout the decades. In addition, the chance to also lead the OU Cross Country program will offer another attractive opportunity for head coaching candidates."
Smith is the second coach to leave OU this summer. The Sooners lost baseball coach Sunny Golloway to Auburn last week. The Sooners have not named a replacement for Smith or Golloway.
