D-backs send Prado to Yankees, net slugging prospect in return

PHOENIX -- Just before the non-waiver trade deadline passed Thursday afternoon, the Diamondbacks acquired catcher Peter O'Brien and a player to be named later or cash considerations for infielder Martin Prado.

O'Brien, 24, combined to hit .267 (103-for-386) with 23 doubles, 33 home runs and 70 RBI in 102 games with Low-A Tampa and Double-A Trenton this season. He entered Thursday tied for second overall in the minor leagues in extra-base hits (58), ranked third home runs, fourth in total bases (229) and ninth in slugging percentage (.593).

O'Brien, who entered the season ranked by MLB.com as the Yankees' No. 9 prospect, was selected to participate in the MLB All-Star Futures Game at Target Field earlier this month, and was named to the 2013 South Atlantic League midseason All-Star Team, 2013 Arizona Fall League Rising Stars Game and 2014 Eastern League midseason All-Star Team.

In 3 Minor League seasons in the Yankees' organization, O'Brien batted .266 (278-for-1,045) with 72 doubles, 65 home runs, 200 RBI and a .533 slugging percentage in 273 games.  He has appeared in 144 games at catcher, 38 at third base, 27 at first and 11 in right field.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound right-handed hitter was selected by the Yankees in the second round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Miami.

Prado, 30, hit .270 (109-for-403) with 17 doubles, four triples, five homers and 42 RBI in 106 games for the D-backs in 2014. In two seasons with Arizona, he hit .278 (281-for-1,012) with 53 doubles, six triples, 19 home runs and 124 RBI. Over parts of nine seasons with the Atlanta Braves (2006-12) and D-backs (2013-14), he has batted .290 (1,033-for-3,558) with 221 doubles, 22 triples, 71 home runs and 410 RBI in 944 games.
