D-backs nearing managerial hire

Published Oct. 12, 2014 7:27 p.m. ET

PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks executive team will meet Sunday night to discuss the franchise's managerial opening, and it is possible a new manager could be in place Monday, a source with knowledge of the process told FOX Sports Arizona.

Not all of the nine candidates interviewed to replace Kirk Gibson remain in play, the source said, refusing to get specific.

D-backs president/CEO Derrick Hall, chief baseball officer Tony La Russa, general manager Dave Stewart and vice president of baseball operations De Jon Watson will attend the meeting.

Former Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies manager Jim Tracy is the only one of the nine to have major league managerial experience, although La Russa and Stewart said previous time on the job is not a prerequisite.

The D-backs also interviewed Cincinnati bench coach Jay Bell, Oakland bench coach Chip Hale, Cleveland bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr., Chicago White Sox third base coach Joe McEwing, Texas interim manager Tim Bogar and in-house candidates Phil Nevin, Andy Green and Turner Ward.

They requested permission to speak to Kansas City bench coach Don Wakamatsu and Dodgers third base coach Lorenzo Bundy but were unable to connect with either.

MLB rules specify teams must ask permission to make major announcements during the postseason, but the D-backs likely would have no trouble with that if a decision is made.

Hale and McEwing also interviewed for the vacant Minnesota job, and the Twins also asked permission to speak to Alomar, according to published reports.
