Texas quarterback David Ash is giving up football after his latest head injury, Longhorns coach Charlie Strong told reporters on Wednesday.

Ash missed 10 games a year ago with a pair of concussions. After recovering from the head injuries, he suffered a broken bone in his foot in spring practice.

Ash approached Strong about the decision. He played all of Texas' season opener against North Texas, completing 19-of-34 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown in the 38-7 win. Hours after the game, though, he called the coaching staff and complained of headaches and dizziness.

Ash will remain a part of the program, but Strong said he told Ash "there was no way" they were going to let him back out on the field because of his history of head injuries.

Sophomore Tyrone Swoopes will assume the full-time starting role after filling it for the past two games in Ash's absence. Strong said Texas does not plan on playing true freshman Jerrod Heard, but didn't rule out the possibility of him getting playing time if Texas had a big lead late in a game.

Defensive lineman Tank Jackson will also undergo ankle surgery after an injury in Texas' 20-17 loss to UCLA and may miss the season. If he doesn't return, Strong said a medical redshirt would be available.

Ash threw 31 touchdown passes and amassed 4,728 yards in 29 career games for Texas.
