Cardinals sign first-rounder Carlson, 19 other prospects

ST. LOUIS -- For 20 young players, the paperwork is done. Now it's time to play ball.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced Wednesday they have have signed Dylan Carlson, a 2016 first-round draft pick (33rd overall), along with 19 other players to minor league contracts.

Carlson, an outfielder from Elk Grove High School in California, was the Cardinals' second pick in the first round in this year's draft. Joining Carlson as draft picks signed Wednesday were fourth-rounder Jeremy Martinez, a catcher from the University of Southern California, and shortstop Tommy Edman from Stanford.

Six of the Cardinals' 12 picks in the top 10 rounds were signed as well as one non-drafted free agent, righthanded pitcher Levi MaVorhies from Kansas State.

The Cardinals have until July 15 at 4 p.m. CT to sign players from the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
