GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) -- Joey Votto hit a two-run homer, an encouraging sign that he's progressing in his recovery from knee surgery that robbed him of his power last season, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the split-squad Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 on Monday.
Votto didn't homer after June 24 last season. He missed 48 games after tearing cartilage in his knee, and was reduced to hitting mostly singles when he returned because the knee wasn't fully healed.
He connected in the third inning off Robert Wooten. Votto also had an RBI groundout off Tyler Thornburg, a third-round draft pick in 2010 who is trying to win a spot in the Brewers' revamped rotation.
Right fielder Jay Bruce was scratched from the Reds' lineup after batting practice because of a sore right heel.
DODGERS 7, CUBS 6
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Dontrelle Willis left because of a shoulder injury just seven pitches into his latest comeback try, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the mistake-prone Chicago Cubs 7-6 Monday.
The 2003 NL Rookie of the Year signed a minor league contract with the Cubs in January. He walked Nick Evans on six pitches to open the eighth inning and then threw one pitch to the next batter before trainers went out to the mound.
Dodgers infielder Omar Luna had the go-ahead RBI in eighth.
The Dodgers trailed by four runs after three innings. The Cubs scored six runs off Dodger pitchers Chad Billingsley and Chris Capuano. Los Angeles scored three in the fifth, including two on Chicago balks.
MARINERS 9, ANGELS 8
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -- Mike Trout singled in his first at-bat this spring and scored twice for the Los Angeles Angels in a 9-8 loss to the Seattle Mariners.
The 20-year-old Trout, the AL Rookie of the Year and runner-up in the MVP voting last season, also walked.
Hank Conger homered, doubled, singled and drove in five runs for the Angels. He hit a three-run homer in the first off Jeremy Bonderman.
The 30-year-old Bonderman, trying to secure a spot in Seattle's rotation after missing the past two seasons, allowed two hits and a walk in his lone inning.
Brendan Ryan homered for the Mariners and Justin Smoak doubled and singled. Seattle rallied for seven runs in the final three innings.
GIANTS 9, WHITE SOX 9
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Madison Bumgarner threw two scoreless innings in his first outing since the second game of the World Series, postseason hero Marco Scutaro had two hits and drove in a run and the San Francisco Giants played the Chicago White Sox to a 9-9 tie Monday.
Paul Konerko had two hits for the White Sox, who played to a tie for the second straight day. Hector Santiago allowed three runs on five hits in his two innings.
Bumgarner walked one, struck out one and allowed two hits in an outing he deemed the first step to continued adjustments.
Santiago, who was impressive during four starts in September and October, said he's not taking anything for granted.
Joaquin Arias, Brett Pill and Cole Gillespie each drove in two runs as the Giants took a 9-0 lead after three innings.
The White Sox got two back in the sixth and tied the game with a 7-run eighth, highlighted by Seth Loman's three-run home run.
ROCKIES 9, RANGERS 1
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Troy Tulowitzki hit a two-run single off Texas starting candidate Justin Grimm and the Colorado Rockies went on to a 9-1 victory over the Rangers on Monday.
Martin Perez, like Grimm among several candidates for the No. 5 spot in the Rangers' rotation, started for Texas and retired all six batters he faced. The left-hander struck out two.
Grimm allowed hits to four of the first six batters he faced after taking over in the third. That included an RBI single by DJ LeMahieu before Tulowitzki's single made it 3-0.
Tulowitzki is 2 for 4 with three RBIs in two spring games. He was limited to 47 games last season and didn't play after May because of left groin surgery.
Charlie Culberson and Nolan Arenado homered in the Colorado eighth.
ROYALS 16, DIAMONDBACKS 4
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) -- Billy Butler doubled, drove in three runs and scored twice Monday, leading the Kansas City Royals in a 16-4 rout of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Nonroster invitees Max Ramirez and Adam Moore had back-to-back pinch-hit home runs in the fifth inning off Steve Garrison. Ramirez hit a grand slam and Moore followed with a monstrous drive to left for his second home run in five spring at-bats.
Diamondbacks starter Randall Delgado, who was acquired from the Braves in the Justin Upton trade on Jan. 24, gave up five runs on six hits in the first inning.
The D-backs also committed two errors in the first.
PADRES 7, BREWERS 1
MARYVALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Jedd Gyorko hit his second homer of the spring, a two-run shot that helped the San Diego Padres beat a Milwaukee Brewers split-squad 7-1 Monday.
A 2010 second-round pick out of West Virginia, Gyorko has eight RBIs in his first four games. He is trying to win the Padres' second base job, which would allow Logan Forsythe to move to third base.
Kyle Blanks and Mark Kotsay each had two of San Diego's 10 hits. Catcher Eddy Rodriguez added a three-run homer in the ninth.
In a possible World Baseball Classic pitching matchup, Milwaukee's Hiram Burgos, faced San Diego starter Edinson Volquez. Burgos, who will play for Puerto Rico, allowed just the homer to Gyorko and struck out two in 2 2/3 innings. Volquez, a Dominican right-hander, allowed two hits and struck out four in two scoreless innings.
INDIANS 14, ATHLETICS 10
PHOENIX (AP) -- Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley needed stitches in his left forearm after being spiked Monday during the Indians' 14-10 win over the Oakland Athletics.
Brantley was spiked by third baseman Josh Donaldson in a play that ended the third inning. Brantley, who hit .288 with 60 RBIs last season, was taken to a hospital for stitches. He will be re-evaluated on Tuesday.
Justin Masterson threw two perfect innings for Cleveland in his first start of the spring. Matt Carson and Yan Gomes homered for the Indians, who improved to 5-0 in exhibition play under new manager Terry Francona.
Shane Peterson and 2010 first-round draft pick Michael Choice homered for the Athletics.
