Brewers recall Cravy, send Lohse to bullpen
It turns out, Tyler Cravy will make another start for the Milwaukee Brewers after all and who knows if and when Kyle Lohse will return to the rotation.
Cravy was recalled from Colorado Springs to take the place of reliever Preston Guilmet, who was sent to the Triple-A club. But instead of pitching out of the bullpen, Cravy will take Lohse's spot in the rotation and start Friday for the Brewers when they host the St. Louis Cardinals.
Lohse has struggled this season to the tune of a 6.31 ERA and 1.468 WHIP. He also is allowing a career-high 1.8 home runs per nine innings. In his last start, Lohse couldn't make it out of the fifth inning against the Cubs. He has made it through seven innings just three times this season and not since May 15. Lohse hasn't pitched in relief since he did so two times with the Phillies in 2007.
"Kyle was a real pro about it and that's what you expect," Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell told reporters. "Despite his struggle, he's been a very positive influence on all of our pitchers and in the clubhouse in general. I have a tremendous amount of respect for what Kyle has done as a major-league player and for what he's done as a Brewer. You don't want it to happen like this but it was the time, we think, that it had to be done."
Cravy should be somewhat familiar with the Cardinals, as he made his major-league debut at St. Louis on June 2. He was tagged with the loss in that game, but pitched well, allowing just one run in seven innings on four hits while walking two and striking out six.
It was back to the minors for Cravy after that, he returned in July and pitched two innings in relief on July 3 at Cincinnati and started against Atlanta on July 7. Overall with the Brewers, Cravy has pitched 15 innings and has a 3.60 ERA, 1.267 WHIP and nine strikeouts. In 17 starts with Colorado Springs, he has a 3.97 ERA, 1.290 WHIP and is striking out 7.1 batters per nine innings.
After being claimed on waivers by the Brewers from the Dodgers on July 31, Guilmet appeared in two games, allowing six runs in two innings.
