Josh Brent, the Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman charged with intoxication manslaughter for his involvement in a car accident that killed his close friend and teammate  Jerry Brown, is scheduled to begin his trial on Sept. 23.

Brent was the driver and Brown the passenger in a Dec. 8 one-car crash in Irving. Police say the car was traveling at a high rate of speed and that Brent had a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit.

The charge can carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Brown's family has asked for leniency for Brent, who has been free on $100,000 bond while awaiting the trial date first confirmed by Bloomberg.
