6 things we learned about the Sooners Monday
1. Bob Stoops isn't going to do much talking about the SEC
Noted SEC personality Paul Finebaum called out coach Oklahoma Bob Stoops when Finebaum poked Stoops by Tweeting the fact Iowa State lost to FCS North Dakota State.
Stoops wasn't asked about that but he did get asked at his weekly press conference on what he thought of the SEC defenses through the first week of the season.
"I'm not gonna sit here and talk about that," Stoops said. "You guys are more than capable of doing that without me. I cause enough waves. This isn't the out-of-season where I cause waves."
Sure, Iowa State lost to North Dakota State, but Finebaum didn't say anything about Temple beating Vanderbilt.
2. Trevor Knight is still learning how to slide
The back-up quarterback situation is still unsettled at OU. Stoops said it was going to be Cody Thomas, but then suggested Blake Bell, who has been moved to tight end this season, could take snaps, too.
Either way, the point is moot if Trevor Knight stays healthy. And one way he can do that is to avoid getting hit. Knight said he was hit only twice Saturday in the win against Louisiana Tech.
That's because he's still learning how to slide.
"I never slid in high school," Knight said. "Maybe one time. If it's there, go get it if it's on a third down or something, but Saturday we did a good job of taking what was there and going down when I needed to."
Who knew sliding was a learned skill?
Stoops did say Bell has been throwing the ball in practice and has been taking some reps at quarterback, but Thomas will be the back-up and is healthy heading into Saturday's game at Tulsa.
3. Eric Striker called out LeBron James
One of the most-exciting players on the Sooner defense is Eric Striker. No matter where he lines up. Striker is probably the team's best, pure pass-rusher, but this season he has been asked to do more in coverage.
"Pass rushing is in my blood," Striker said. "I still want to take the QB's head off."
Well, that would be a targeting penalty and an immediate ejection, but you get what Striker is saying. Meanwhile, Striker called out LeBron James and Louisiana Tech in the same thought on Monday.
When Striker got caught up with La. Tech's Kenneth Dixon during second quarter, Dixon fell backward and threw up his arms and was asked if it looked Dixon was flopping â soccer style.
"He did, didn't he?" Striker said. "Or LeBron James. "That's just him (Dixon) trying to get a penalty. He sold it a lot, didn't he. I laughed. I'm sure you all laughed. I think he should win an Oscar for it."
4. Blake Bell wasn't hurt against Louisiana Tech
Bell didn't catch a pass in his first game at tight end for the Sooners, but he did have one chance on a pass from Knight in the endzone. Pass interference was called and Bell fell to the ground and his helmet made a huge divot in the endzone and his face mask was filled with sod.
"I was hoping to one-hand that one, but I didn't," Bell said of the pass. "I came up a little slow. I was fine. Half the field was in my face mask. I couldn't see. That's why I had to come out. I'm fine. I just had to come off the field and fix it."
5. Samaje Perine has heard it all
Perine had an impressive debut Saturday, getting 13 carries and going for 77 yards.
And by the way, it's pronounced P-rine, despite what you have heard, or tried to say.
"The weirdest way I've heard is, Pair-en-A," he said. "I don't know where they got that from."
And no, just in case you were wondering, Perine is not French.
6. Jeffery Mead is not hungry
By just his looks, it appeared freshman wideout Jeffery Mead was headed toward a redshirt season.
Mead is 6-foot-6 and weighs just 184 pounds, however, he was a surprise participant in the first game of the season.
And while Mead said you don't have to be 250 pounds to catch the football, he also said he is trying to get bigger.
"I'm working out all the time and constantly eating," Mead said. "I'm trying. We'll see how it goes. I still haven't put on weight."
Mead is the tallest receiver on the team and towers over Sterling Shepard (5-10) and fellow freshman K.J. Young (6-0).
