MOSCOW (AP) A 22-year-old modern pentathlete from Russia who won a silver medal at this year's world championships died last week of a suspected heart attack, the country's modern pentathlon federation said Monday.
Alexander Kukarin died Friday in a Moscow hotel, Russian Modern Pentathlon Federation spokesman Alexei Popov told The Associated Press. An investigation is under way but there are no signs of foul play, Popov said.
Kukarin was considered an up-and-coming athlete who had this year begun to break into the Russian national team, one of the world's strongest, ahead of next year's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
His biggest achievement came in June, when he and Kirill Belyakov won relay silver for Russia at the world championships in Berlin.
