Toronto Maple Leafs Player Preview: Trevor Moore
Trevor Moore was a surprise signing by the Toronto Maple Leafs this off-season, but he’s been generating some interest through camp and the first pre-season game.
Before inking his deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Moore was at the University of Denver where he had back to back 44 point seasons.
College signings have been general manager’s new favorite thing lately, and Toronto is no stranger. Zach Hyman was acquired and signed through the Florida Panthers via the college system. Jimmy Vesey was the headline this summer – I’m sure you heard about him.
There’s a low-risk, high-reward factor in college free agents that can’t be ignored – especially when the player is a point per game from his college league.
More from Editor In Leaf
The 21 year old Moore will have three seasons on an ELC to develop into an NHL regular and he’s likely going to only see the ice at Ricoh this year with the Marlies.
The Leafs depth of forwards, young and old, will pose a significant road block for any desires he has of making the big club this season.
To his credit he’s come to camp and impressed at each stage. The pre-season game in Halifax saw him become gradually more comfortable as the game progressed and he’ll be a player to watch for the rest of the pre-season.
What the Leafs can expect of Moore is a sound two-way game with the Marlies this year. His point totals aren’t of the utmost importance this year as he learns the professional game.
His transition is not unlike that of a European player adjusting to North America in the sense that there’s a maturity level already present and he just needs to adjust to speed and systems.
I think happiness should be achieved with a 0.35 point per game season while being a strong two-way forward in his rookie professional year. He should be able to catch the eyes of management with that and give himself a chance to see action with the Leafs in 2017-2018.
