Pittsburgh Penguins forward Nick Bonino is expected to be sidelined for "at least a month" due to an undisclosed injury, general manager Jim Rutherford told the Pittsburgh Post Gazette on Thursday.

Coach Mike Sullivan detailed later in the day that Bonino is nursing a hand injury, but did not issue a timeframe for his absence.

The 27-year-old Bonino had returned to Pittsburgh for medical evaluation on Wednesday, one day after exiting in the third period of the Penguins' 3-2 loss at the Carolina Hurricanes.

Bonino has collected three goals and seven assists in 40 games this season for the Penguins, who acquired the Connecticut native from the Vancouver Canucks on July 1. Pittsburgh also received defenseman Adam Clendening and a 2016 second-round pick from Vancouver for forward Brandon Sutter and a 2016 third-round selection.

A sixth-round pick of the 2007 draft, Bonino has recorded 51 goals and 80 assists in 304 career contests with the Anaheim Ducks, Canucks and Penguins.
