Patrick Roy claims Avalanche too focused on Jarome Iginla's milestone goal

Colorado Avalanche veteran Jarome Iginla has been sitting at 599 career goals for three games now, and in the wake of a 4-0 Avalanche loss to the Calgary Flames on Saturday, Colorado coach Patrick Roy told reporters his team is too focused on Iginla's possible milestone tally.

The situation was exemplified by a moment in Saturday's game when Alex Tanguay was open in front of the net but chose to pass the puck to Iginla instead of taking the shot himself.

Via The Denver Post:

"I thought we had good intention, (but) I guess we focused more in seeing Iggy scoring that 600th instead of playing our game," Roy told reporters. "We had a few good chances and we tried to pass the puck to him instead of bringing it to the net."

Saturday's loss was the first thoroughly poor effort by the Avalanche since Iginla scored his 599th goal on Dec. 27 in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Coyotes. The Avalanche played well when they topped the Sharks, 6-3, on Dec. 28 then played a close game but ultimately lost to the Blackhawks in overtime, 4-3, on Dec. 31.

Iginla's longest goal-less streak so far this season was nine games from Dec. 1 through Dec. 17. It seems like Colorado hopes Iginla will finally get his 600th goal done and over with soon.
