Money doesn't guarantee spot in Flyers' lineup

The Philadelphia Flyers aren't letting a player's salary dictate if he should be in the lineup.

In fact, the Flyers have several high-priced bystanders watching the parade - notably center R.J. Umberger ($4.6 million this season), veteran forward Vincent Lecavalier ($4.5 million) and defenseman Luke Schenn ($3.6 million). Heck, even defenseman Andrew MacDonald ($5 million) was shuffled to Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League prior to the 2015-16 campaign.

"Everybody understands what this organization's about," Philadelphia general manager Ron Hextall told the Courier Post. "It’s about winning. It’s about putting the best team on the ice every night. That's (coach Dave Hakstol's) job. We've got no other parameters than that. I don’t care how much money is in the lineup or how much is out. We're going to put the best team out on the ice every night."

The early results have been favorable, as the Flyers (3-2-1) rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period to post a 5-4 overtime victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday.

Umberger joined Schenn in notching an assist versus the Bruins. The former has set up three goals in three games this season while the latter has just the one in that same span.

Lecavalier, 35, has yet to have a shift in any contest in 2015-16 after recording career lows in goals (eight), assists (12) and points (20) in 57 games last season.
