Flyers place pricey defenseman MacDonald on waivers

The Philadelphia Flyers will place Andrew MacDonald on waivers Monday, nearly 18 months after the veteran defenseman signed a six-year, $30 million contract.

General manager Ron Hextall confirmed the move will be made at noon.

While once thought of as one of the league's best bargains at the 2014 trade deadline, MacDonald quickly fell out of favor in Philadelphia. The 29-year-old sustained a knee injury early in the 2014-15 season and collected two goals and 10 assists in 58 games for the Flyers.

"It was disappointing,” MacDonald told the Courier-Post earlier this summer. "Obviously it’s not nearly the way I envisioned things going. I was pretty disappointed in myself and my own play and I just felt like things snowballed throughout the year."

MacDonald, who is expected to be sent to Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League should he clear waivers, was acquired from the New York Islanders on March 4, 2014. He signed a multi-year extension nearly six weeks later.
