DeKeyser scores in OT to help Red Wings beat Coyotes 3-2
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Danny DeKeyser scored in overtime and the Detroit Red Wings used two third-period power-play goals to rally and beat the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 on Thursday night.
Rookie Dylan Larkin kept the puck on a rush that ended behind the net, spun around and fed DeKeyser for a wrist shot over Louis Domingue's shoulder with 2:52 left.
Pavel Datsyuk and Gustav Nyquist scored in the third to help the Red Wings come back from a 2-0 deficit. Petr Mrazek stopped 27 shots, and Detroit finished with five wins during a six-game trip.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Shane Doan scored second-period goals and Domingue made 22 saves. Arizona's four-game winning streak was snapped.
The tying goal, with 5:40 left, withstood an Arizona challenge for goalie interference. While Anthony Duclair served a hooking penalty, Domingue made a stick save on Nyquist. With Domingue sprawled out and bodies in the crease, Nyquist poked the puck over Domingue for his 13th goal.
Datsyuk ended Domingue's bid for a third shutout in a month with a wrist shot at 11:50 while Vermette was out for hooking.
The dazzling rookie Larkin picked up his 16th assist to give Detroit the season sweep.
Before that, the Coyotes were in control.
Ekman-Larsson put Arizona ahead when he collected Jordan Martinook's bouncing rebound in the slot and beat Mrazek low at 4:51 of the second period for his 13th goal.
Arizona went up 2-0 with Datsyuk serving a hooking penalty. Tobias Rieder's shot deflected off Doan's skate deep in the crease with 1:16 left in the second. The goal withstood a video review and was the 39-year-old Doan's team-leading 16th.
Detroit gave up two power-play goals in a loss Monday night to Los Angeles that snapped a four-game winning streak and entered ranked 25th on the penalty kill.
Detroit did some relaxing in the warm weather this week. Some players golfed, others took batting practice at the Chicago White Sox spring training facility, and some went into the desert on off-road vehicles.
The rest didn't immediately reverse a trend that had troubled Detroit coach Jeff Blashill, who wanted more shots for a team that entered with seven goals in four games.
But the Red Wings came alive with the help of costly penalties by the Coyotes.
NOTES: In Kyle Quincey's second game back from ankle surgery, the Red Wings went back to dressing six defensemen instead of seven. That left Alexy Marchenko a healthy scratch, one game after he scored against Los Angeles. ... The Coyotes placed D Stefan Elliott on waivers, a move that could lead to W John Scott's return from the minors in time to be eligible for the All-Star Game. Scott was voted the Pacific Division captain by fans and has one assist in 11 games this season. ... Arizona D Kevin Connauton, acquired Wednesday off waivers from Columbus, was a healthy scratch.
