Report: Patriots release QB Matt Flynn, sign Ryan Lindley

Published Aug. 10, 2015 10:00 a.m. ET

For the first time in recent memory, the New England Patriots actually need a quarterback behind Tom Brady on the depth chart. With Brady set to miss the first four games of the season because of Deflategate, Jimmy Garoppolo will take the reins in his absence.

Behind Garoppolo, however, is where it gets interesting. On Monday, the Patriots made a couple of moves, releasing Matt Flynn and reportedly signing Ryan Lindley to take his spot.

Flynn, who has been on the non-football injury list throughout training camp due to a hamstring injury, hasn't recovered from the injury the Patriots had hoped. It's believed to be the reason for his release from New England.

In his place, Lindley will take over as the No. 3 quarterback on the roster -- although the Patriots should pray that he never sees the field in 2015.

If he does, it not only means both Brady and Garoppolo are unable to play for whatever reason, but it also means the Patriots are in deep trouble -- based on his numbers in 2014.

He started two games for the Arizona Cardinals last season, completing 48 percent of his passes with four interceptions and two touchdowns. In 2012, he started four games for the Cardinals, throwing seven touchdowns to 12 interceptions. Needless to say, those aren't the kind of numbers the Patriots want to see this season.
