Mularkey wants better effort from Titans following loss to Jets

Published Dec. 15, 2015 1:25 a.m. ET

After a lackluster performance in Sunday's 30-8 loss to the New York Jets, Tennessee Titans interim head coach Mike Mularkey said his team's effort was better than he initially thought after looking at the tape after the game, but still far short of expectations.

In particular, Mularkey pointed to a 16-yard touchdown catch by Jets running back Bilal Powell, in which a number of Tennessee defenders failed to make a tackle, including cornerback Perrish Cox. Mularkey said he would like to have seen Cox make a better attempt at bringing Powell down at the goal line.

For his part, Cox agreed the defense's performance wasn't up to snuff, calling it a "big step back."

“I addressed the whole team with it,’’ Mularkey said. “So it’s not just addressed with Perrish, it’s addressed with the whole team. That’s not what we want. We want better effort.

“You are talking to everybody so they understand this is not what we want. It is not going to be acceptable, and there will be the consequences if it happens.”

Hopefully the effort is there this week, as the challenge won't be an easier. The Titans travel to New England to take on the Patriots on Sunday.
