Jalen Mills already becoming a leader on Philadelphia Eagles defense

Jalen Mills is playing more like a veteran than a rookie.

During the 2016 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles used their 233rd overall pick on Jalen Mills, a 22-year-old defensive back out of LSU. Mills was regarded by many as the steal of the draft and it’s pretty safe to say now that those assumptions were warranted.

Mills has exceeded expectations as a rookie, playing a major role in the Eagles’ thin group of cornerbacks. He’s seen a significant amount of opportunities on the outside and, though he’s had his fair share of hiccups, has managed to hold his own.

Despite being a first-year pro, Mills is already taking on a leadership role. Mills was seen leading his team out of the tunnel prior to the Eagles’ 21-10 victory over the Minnesota Vikings Sunday.

It’s not hard to see why he was so highly regarded going into the season.

With Ron Brooks likely out for the remainder of the season, expect to see a lot more of Mills down the stretch, which certainly is not a bad thing. Mills has been one of the Eagles’ better corners this season and may even be outperforming veterans Nolan Carroll and Leodis McKelvin.

Cornerback is one of the hardest positions to master at the professional level, but Mills is taking it all in stride, and then some.
