It's time for Geno Smith to save Jets' season
The New York Jets are 1-3 and panic is starting to set in. Not all hope is lost, the season can still be saved if the Jets hand the reins to Geno Smith.
While some fans of the New York Jets are going to say, “hold the phone it’s only four games into the season.” Well, when is the right time to make a change? Especially considering the tough slate of games awaiting the Jets. Gang Green should make the change sooner rather than later before it’s too late.
But at this point in the season, we must evaluate all options, including giving Geno Smith one more shot. Why should we switch quarterbacks?
Here are some more nuggets of information to digest from the ESPN Stats & Info lab:
“Ryan Fitzpatrick was intercepted three more times Sunday, raising his season total to 10. Eight of the 10 interceptions have come in the fourth quarter, including all three Sunday. Nine of the 10 have come with the Jets trailing, including all three Sunday. Fitzpatrick has been intercepted targeting six different receivers, including four while targeting Brandon Marshall (two to Marshall Sunday).”
Fitzpatrick has been 23 flavors of awful. While there are 12 million reasons why not to bench Fitzpatrick, you have to look past the financials.
Despite the 1-3 record, the Jets can still turn their season around. It would be foolish to think that the offense is the only problem on this team.

Its still plays a vital role in the Jets record thus far this season. If the Jets were to make a switch at the quarterback position, there’d be a ton of benefits.
Smith is more mobile and possesses a much better arm. Several of Fitzpatrick’s interceptions this year have simply been because he couldn’t get it to the right spot and it fluttered short.
While Smith has the capability to turn the season around for the Jets, don’t count head coach Todd Bowles as a believer. He reiterated his confidence in Fitzpatrick after the game, courtesy of the Media Relations Department of the Jets:
“I do worry about the turnovers obviously, but they weren’t all his fault. My confidence in Ryan hasn’t wavered. I’m still as confident in Ryan as I was before the season started.”
While it’s easy to respect the resiliency of Bowles, he did make a good point for sticking with Fitzpatrick after the game. He cited last season when the Jets lost four games in a five-week stretch.
Yet they overcame those obstacles and ended the season with their best record since 2010. But for some reason, this current slump seems different.
While it seems unlikely that Bowles will change to Smith, especially after his comments, his tune may change depending on how these next two weeks go for the Jets. But by then, it might be too late to make such a quarterback change.
