Cowboys Punter Chris Jones Lays Out Andre Roberts With Hit (Video)
Dallas Cowboys punter Chris Jones used the hit stick on Andre Roberts on the sideline to stop a nice return.
Chris Jones is one of the unsung heroes of the Dallas Cowboys. While their offense as a whole gets plenty of credit and so too does the surprisingly competent defense, the special teams have been phenomenal. Jones as the punter has been great for much of the year at not putting his teammates in a bad position. In Week 16 on Monday Night Football, though, he got a little more hands-on.
Up against the Detroit Lions, the Cowboys were up big in the fourth quarter. However, their offense got stopped at that point and Jones took the field to kick it away while backed up deep into his own end zone.
He got the kick off with Andre Roberts fielding it around the 50-yard line. The Lions returner made a nice move to cut his return outside to the left and took off. Nearing the red zone, though, Jones came into the picture. Roberts seemed to think he could go right through the punter. Instead, the Cowboys special teamer came up and laid the hit stick on Roberts, sending him flying out of bound to end it:
And who said punters couldn’t get physical in the mix.
Admittedly, that’s not the play you really want your punter having to make on a consistent basis if you’re the Cowboys—or any other team. However, that doesn’t make it any less awesome when Jones or any other punter/kicker lays the wood with a big hit.
