Bills re-sign QB Matt Cassel, name him Tyrod Taylor's backup

Just days after releasing him, the Buffalo Bills re-signed quarterback Matt Cassel. He was due to make $4.15 million this season, which the Bills were clearly not willing to pay.

Cassel's new contract will cost the Bills far less, which allowed them to bring back the veteran quarterback. After signing Cassel, head coach Rex Ryan told reporters that he will serve as the team's primary backup, with EJ Manuel falling to No. 3 on the depth chart.

Bringing back Cassel is somewhat surprising, but Ryan said throughout training camp that he wanted to carry three quarterbacks. What's more shocking is that Cassel immediately supplanted Manuel as the team's backup, even after Manuel played well in the preseason.

Bringing back Cassel doesn't make Manuel expendable, but it shows the lack of confidence the Bills have in him. He may not be with the team after this season, given his lack of success in Buffalo.

To make room for Cassel on the roster, the Bills released sixth-round tight end Nick O'Leary.
