The Minnesota Vikings had hoped that having Adrian Peterson back on the field would turn around a season that has gone south with six losses in eight games after a 5-0 start, but that certainly wasn’t the case Sunday.

Peterson, in his first game back since needing surgery to repair a torn meniscus suffered in Week 2, played with a knee brace and was far from the running back who led the NFL with 1,485 rushing yards last season.

He carried only six times for 22 yards and fumbled the ball on his longest run of the day, a 13-yard gain in the second quarter.

Minnesota ended up losing 34-6 at home, dropping to 7-7 on the season. Peterson, 31, struggled this season in limited action even before the injury and now has 37 carries for just 72 yards – a 1.9-yard average – over three games. He’s signed for 2017, but it’s hard to imagine the team bringing back its all-time leading rusher at his scheduled salary if he doesn’t show quite a bit more in Minnesota’s final two games.
