Throwback Thursday: LeBron James' Old NBA 2K Ratings

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

NBA 2k17 was released this last weekend. With that in mind it seems appropriate to look back and see how LeBron James has evolved from 2k4 to 2k17.

All of the buzz in the NBA world is about the new NBA 2k17 video game. It has gotten great reviews from critics and NBA players alike.

One of the most controversial aspects about this time of year is the individual player ratings. Many players in the league believe that they should be rated higher than they are. Some aren’t afraid to let their opinions known to the rest of the world.

Two examples of this are Kristaps Porzingis and Brandon Jennings.

It’s no surprise that LeBron James is the top rated player in this year’s version of the game with a 96 overall rating. However, last year was the first time in five years that James wasn’t the highest rated player. Stephen Curry stole the throne for part of last season, but he couldn’t hold onto that just like his Golden State Warriors couldn’t hold onto a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals.

While LeBron is the top rated player in the current game, there was a time when he was rated as 78 overall and a point guard. That was LeBron’s rating during his rookie year in ESPN NBA Basketball, which is basically NBA 2K4. Other key ratings from LeBron’s rookie season were his 85 dunk rating, 55 block rating, 80 passing rating, and his 70 three-point rating.

The developers at 2K quickly upped LeBron’s ratings in 2K5. He started that game as a small forward and he was an 88 overall. Also improved was his 95 dunk rating and 85 passer ratings.

Here is a complete list of all of LeBron’s 2K overall ratings through the years.

While we will probably never see LeBron rated 98 or 99 overall again, it is clear that he is still the best player on the virtual and actual hardwood. Younger players such as Curry, Kevin Durant and Anthony Davis have been trying to overtake the number one spot for years. But as of now LeBron is back on the throne.

We will see if LeBron can hold on to his spot as the highest rated player when the new season begins.
