IndyCar suspends safety team member

Published Sep. 8, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

IndyCar has suspended a member of its safety team for two events for not following on-track protocol during the start of the Baltimore Grand Prix.

The safety team member was driving a truck that pulled into Turn 1 and narrowly missed a field that was accelerating after taking the green flag Sunday. The truck's crew had been readjusting tire barriers during the pace laps, and the truck was supposed to move to a station between turns 2 and 4.

IndyCar said it wouldn't identify the driver, who will miss the events at Twin Ring Motegi and Kentucky Speedway.

Series President Brian Barnhart says IndyCar has met with all of its team members to reinforce its procedures.
