Report: D-backs agree to trade former closer Reed to Mets

NEW YORK — Looking for late-inning help in the bullpen, the New York Mets have agreed to a trade with Arizona that would send reliever Addison Reed to the NL East leaders, according to a person familiar with the deal.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Saturday night because no announcement had been made. The deal is likely subject to a review of medical records.

ESPN.com first reported the agreement. Multiple reports indicated the Diamondbacks would receive two minor leaguers from the Mets.

Trying to reach the playoffs for the first time in nine years, the Mets acquired setup man Tyler Clippard and left-hander Eric O'Flaherty in separate trades with Oakland this summer. But they lack a proven and dependable arm to handle the seventh inning, in large part because Jenrry Mejia is serving a drug suspension and Bobby Parnell struggled in his return from Tommy John surgery before going back on the disabled list.

Reed could be the answer if he has rediscovered the form that's helped him compile 104 saves with the Diamondbacks and Chicago White Sox since 2012.

In the clubhouse after Arizona's 3-2 loss to Oakland, Reed said he had heard nothing about a trade other than texts from friends about the media reports. But he acknowledged that he'd welcome joining the Mets.

''That would be awesome,'' he said. ''Don't get me wrong, I love it here, but they (the Mets) are 5 1/2 games, 6 games up. That would be awesome to go over there and help the team with the ultimate goal of getting a ring. That's my ultimate goal before I'm done playing. I want to get to the World Series. If that happens this year, that would be awesome.''

The 26-year-old right-hander lost his job as Arizona's closer this season and was demoted to the minors for three weeks to work on mechanical problems. But he has a 1.65 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings since being recalled from Triple-A Reno on July 29. He put together a stretch of 13 scoreless innings from July 31 to Aug. 25, equaling his career best.

Overall, he is 2-2 with a 4.20 ERA and three saves in 38 appearances this year. He has 34 strikeouts and 14 walks in 40 2/3 innings.

If the Mets complete the deal by Monday, Reed would be eligible to pitch for them in the postseason. New York leads the NL East by 5 1/2 games over Washington.

Reed is under team control through 2017. He filed for arbitration last offseason and is making $4,875,000 this year. He will be eligible for arbitration again next year.

Reed came to Arizona in a December 2013 trade that sent third baseman Matt Davidson to the White Sox. Reed was 1-7 with a 4.25 ERA and 32 saves last season.
